Perth Mint Australia
In 1817 the gold Sovereign was reintroduced. As
the British Empire expanded under Queen Victoria during the 1800’s,
the Sovereign came to be the most widely distributed gold coin in
the world. Sovereigns were originally minted in
London, however they
came to be minted all over the world as Australia and South Africa
became large gold producers. Mints in Pretoria, Bombay, Ottawa,
Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney turned out hundreds of millions of
Sovereigns during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

the reign of King Henry VII, the sovereign has played an immense
role in the commerce and banking sector of the British Empire. The

reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V.
Now The Perth Mint is back in regular production of
the modern day sovereign, meticulously struck from 22-carat gold and
issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
